Rivers Ohakune is an award-winning eco-luxury boutique bed and breakfast at 44 Burns Street, Ohakune, New Zealand. Set at the peaceful confluence of the Mangawhero and Mangateitei rivers, it combines high-end comfort with genuine environmental stewardship. Winner of the 2026 Rising Star Bed & Breakfast of the Year Award from B&B Association NZ and holder of a Qualmark Gold Award for sustainability, Two Rivers is an eco-conscious sanctuary for discerning travellers exploring the Ruapehu and Tongariro regions.
Our guests choose us for adventure or wellness. Some guests will take on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, while others choose gentler but equally beautiful walks from the Whakapapa or Ohakune Mountain roads. Others are drawn to cycling trails within the Mountains to Sea network. Most summer guests are international visitors from Europe or North America. We love to curate a relaxed, multi-cultural environment. Travellers of all nationalities are warmly welcome at Two Rivers. Owners Ula and Scott are European and have lived in New Zealand since 2011, and in Ohakune since 2024.
Two Rivers offers three guest suites. Two have private decks, each with its own private hot tub. The third has a deck that is sometimes used for access by another room. For small groups travelling together, this arrangement can be ideal, allowing the two decks to be privately shared, with a hot tub large enough for four. The hot tubs are a perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure, especially after completing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or the Tama Lakes Track.
Wellness seekers value the retreat-like atmosphere of Two Rivers. The three guest suites sit just above the riverbanks, accompanied by the constant, soothing sound of mountain streams. With uninterrupted views towards Tongariro National Park from all three rooms, and views of Mt Ruapehu from two, it is an ideal place to pause, unwind, and simply relax.
Two Rivers partners with The Cypress Tree, a high-quality restaurant in Ohakune, while several other dining options are also available nearby. The town’s restaurants and bars are a short 15-minute walk along a serene, forested riverside track, or just a two-minute drive away.

Burns Street is found directly from SH49, which connects State Highways 1 and 4. Two Rivers is around 600 metres from the junction with SH49 on a quiet and sleepy road, just where the town finishes and the countryside start.
Two Rivers is:
• A short walk (15 mins) to the Town Centre, for eateries, cycle hire and shuttle to the Old Coach Road and other cycle destinations.
• 20-30 Minutes to the Turoa Ski Area, with many walks off the mountain road
• 40-50 Minutes to the Whakapapa Ski Area, with many walks off the Bruce Road
• 30-40 Minutes to National Park/Waimarino for shuttle options to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Ohakune is:
• 3.5 hours north of Wellington,
• 4.5 hours south of Auckland,
• 2.5 hours south of Rotorua
• and around 3 hours from either Napier or New Plymouth.
It is an ideal location for breaking the journey from Rotorua (or the Bay of Plenty) and Wellington. The Northern Explorer Train Services stops in Ohakune, and guests can request a free transfer with advance notice.

Two Rivers has three suites. All are independent from the main house. This arrangement offers flexibility and privacy. All are ensuite with kitchenette facilities for breakfast. Each room has a private entrance within a few metres of the two rivers, offering a soothing soundtrack during your stay.
All three overlook the gardens and riverbanks that are being restored back to native species. They also look across fields to the Tongariro National Park, with Two Suites having direct views of the peak of Mt Ruapehu. Two Suites have decks that are for your private use, including maintained Hot Pools.
We described our suites as boutique or cosy. They are 18M2 but cleverly designed to maximise comfort for a 2-3 day stay. All three rooms were lovingly redecorated to European Standards in 2025.

Rua Awa
This is the premier suite, a tiny home approach to accommodation that is separate to the other rooms. Tastefully furnished and highly elegant. With a private 2 seater hot pool, it sits proudly with views from the decks down to the Two Rivers, and across to the Tongariro National Park. A mature and beautiful beech tree obscures the peaks of Mt Ruapehu, but the lower hills can be clearly seen. A stunning, luxurious escape.
Mangawhero
This superior suite has a private deck and hot tub. It is the closest suited to the river. Beautiful in presentation it is highly prized and just as luxurious and comfortable as Rua Awa. Access is (currently – mid 2026) via a deck that is shared with the Mangateitei suite. A private door and deck is available.
Mangateitei
This suite is still of premium quality. For guests who do not require a hot tub, then the lower price is certainly attractive. The internal fittings are equal in every way to the other two rooms. There is a covered deck with a choice of seating. Please note that if guests are staying in the Mangawhero Suite then they will walk past your deck on occasion.
Please note that if you travel as a small group, then combining the Mangawhero and Mangateitei suites gives a very private experience with the four-seater hot tub.
Breakfast is provided as a comprehensive hamper using locally purchased items. This arrangement adds to your privacy, and if your are leaving early for an adventure then ensures you can eat before departure.
